Atatürk ve Hititler

This book reveals the surprising characteristics of the Hittites, founders of Anatolia’s first empire. You would probably be astounded to hear that 3,500 years ago people had to shower and keep their nails clean before going to beerhouses and restaurants, not out of politeness, but by law. If I told you that the Hittites in Hattusha invented the first sewage system, and that homes in those times included bathtubs, you would probably think I was exaggerating, but it’s true! What’s more, the Hittites were the first to process iron regularly. They also invented doorway thresholds, the pinning system used to fix rocks together, the passage called a potern made by piling up stones, the chest wall used for reinforcment, and much more. They abandoned the “eye for an eye” concept and set up a compensation system that serves as the basis of modern law. The Hittite Queen Puduhepa, could be considered the first feminist. The assembly called the Panku was superior to the king, and even he had to obey the laws of the Hittites’ simple constitution. In this way, you could that the Hittites established the first constitutional monarchy. It is also worth mentioning that there was no death penalty. Although the Hittites have vanished into the void of history, their goddess Hepat is still identified with the Japanese goddess of the sun Amaterasu. Each year in April, thousands of Japanese come to Hattusha and celebrate the ascendance of the goddess from underground to the sky.
